Introduction

I’ve always been “one of those”.  In middle school and high school I was a “mentally gifted minor”.   I scored in the top 5% on the High School National Physics exam, without studying.  I couldn’t talk or relate to “normal” people.  Now I have learned that my greatest asset, and detriment, is that I am functionally dyslexic.  I see things differently.  Normal thought is like an electric train.  Dyslexic thought is like a pin-ball game.

In 1972, I was a senior at U.C. Irvine.  Greenhouse Gas/Global Cooling was the threat.  I drank that Kool Aid and invested my treasure into solving the problem.  In 1972 I built a car that met 1986 air pollution requirement.  Why?  I was told it couldn’t be done.

In 1993, I was the maintenance man on 241 condos in California.  We had a garbage problem.  So I created the best multi-family recycling program in California.  It was a business decision.  It made good business sense that if I diverted half the garbage through recycling, I’d save half on the garbage bill.  That was a $25,000/year savings.  That answered the critical question.  When trying to change human behavior, the critical question is, “What’s in it for me”.  The answer, in this case, was saving $10/month in HOA dues.  Recycling enough newspaper and cardboard to save 50,000 trees was a side effect.

The passion required to create and implement the recycling program got me labeled “The Recycling Maniac” by a Waste Management spokeswoman.

I originally turned on www.environmentalmaniac.com because of Compact Florescent Lights.  CFLs are great.  BUT, I think it is environmentally irresponsible to promote or distribute a product that becomes a bio-hazard without notifying the consumer of the hazard.  I just want consumers to know what the www.epa.gov/cflcleanup has to say.  Why?  Because CFLs contain 75 times more Mercury than fresh tuna.  No, you’re not going to eat the CFL.  But 30% of the Mercury is atomized.  You inhale it.  For small children and pregnant woman it is critical.  Mercury goes straight though the placenta and amplifies in the fetus.

In fact, I packed a burned out CFL when I moved form Nor Cal to Estrella.  That’s what I do.  I was the Recycling Maniac.  I keep burned out CFLs (& batteries) in a bag next to where I keep new bulbs.  When I moved, I had a burned out CFL so I packed it with the new bulbs and recycled it at a Goodyear recycling day.

The Mercury in CFLs is bad; but no where near as bad as he Mercury emitted into our atmosphere from processing gold.  Gold processing emits 20 times more Mercury than all the coal power plants in the U.S. combined.  Climate Change comes and goes.  Mercury is forever.  Mercury is the only element that sinks to the bottom of a landfill and yet can evaporate.

When I got to Arizona, the first thing I did was to build the most technologically advanced backyard structure in the valley.  I was going to go into production with my #2 son.  But, when he graduated high school, he went to visit #1 son who was in the Air Force and stationed in Germany.  #2 called from Germany and said he was joining the Marine Corps.

I put everything in storage.

Then I decided to add the new technology to my house.  I continued researching radiant energy and radiant barriers.  Half the sun’s energy is radiant and Phoenix gets 40% more radiant energy than Miami.  We get more radiant energy because 95% of all Greenhouse Gas is water vapor and Phoenix is a dry heat.  The onequadrillion.com site has over 2,000 pages of research and over 100 tests that I have personally conducted.  The results are impressive.

I’ve reduce the air conditioning usage on my house by 50%.  I am saving 7,000 kWh and $900 a year.  That’s the energy equivalent of 4 barrels of oil.

Dual Plane Attic® and EvAAC – Evaporation Aided Air Conditioning came out of the research and testing.  I added both to a “Beazer” tract home that was rebuilt this winter after being gutted by fire.  We are saving over 60% on the air conditioning.

THAT IS AN IMPRESSIVE SAVINGS!

I will share more excitement in the last section of this report, “Excitement in Arizona’s Future”.

Scientific Proof:  No Global Warming in Phoenix for the last decade

There hasn’t been a “warming trend” in Arizona for the last decade.  Scientific proof can be found on the Atlas Testing web site (www.atlas-mts.com).  Atlas Testing is a global leader in Weathering Testing and Weathering Test Equipment.  They have a test facility 30 miles north of Phoenix where they record daily temperatures.  Those temperatures are posted on their site.  Anyone can look them up and do the analysis.

Phoenix has had “Heat Island Effect” (ASU studies).

The easiest way to understand Heat Island Effect is to walk to the middle of your street after sundown.  The asphalt is hotter than the gravel because it absorbed more radiant energy and the street’s mass retains the heat.  Heat Island Effect is more a function of the sun’s radiant energy than ambient temperatures.  The challenge here is that increased Heat Island Effect is more an indicator of increased sun activity, reducing greenhouse gasses or both.  But that’s another story.

The significance of this discovery is that it provides proof that the Global Warming measurements in Phoenix are actually measuring Heat Island Effect, not Global Warming.  This same circumstance has been theorized in many other testing locations.  We have proof.

I made this discovery while researching for the Dual Plane Attic project.  At the time, there was speculation that our planet’s warming was due to the sun. Understand that half the sun’s energy is radiant.   I thought I could use the data collect by Atlas Testing to document the effect of the sun.  I found no correlation in my radiant energy analysis.  What I did find is that Phoenix receives 40% more radiant energy per square foot than Miami.  That discovery was the impetus to continue looking for a cost-effective solution to reflecting radiant energy in homes and businesses.

Not finding any indication of increasing radiant energy, I then analyzed the temperature data on the site.  Not only wasn’t there any warming, there wasn’t even any “trending”.

Then I was confused by the Global Warming claims and read the 2007 U.N. IPCC report.

The U.N. IPCC Reports - Humanized

The U.N. reports are 25% analysis and 75% projections of gloom and doom.

I love science.  But let me humanize the Global Warming Report for those who don’t.

If a 10 year old boy accidently throws a ball on the roof of his house, and if he climbs on the near-by wall to gain access to the tall tree overhanging the roof, and if he climbs from the tree to the roof to get his ball, and if he slips and falls head-first into a bush next to his house, and if he is knocked unconscious, the paramedics might be called, who might need to take him to the hospital, where they might need to perform a very long surgery, and there might be a long battle for life, and the boy may die.  And the medical bills may force his single mom to lose her home forcing her to move back in with her parents, making her commute to work longer, causing her old car to break down, making her miss work and finally losing her job.  It would be a tragedy.

But if the boy’s ball rolls off the roof all by itself, the rest of the “if’s” don’t matter.

U.N. IPCC Fourth Assessment Report

The U.N. IPCC Report falls apart quickly.  Working Group I Report “The Physical Science Basis” illustrates some of the holes in the Global Warming Theories.  The first is the assumed starting date of industrial man’s influence on climate: 1750.  That was the ending date of the Little Ice Age.  It is a hard stretch to say George Washington lived in the industrial era.

There are scientific inconsistencies throughout the first two reports.  Then there are the facts that eliminate the solidity of the report.  First, understand that 95% of Greenhouse Gas is water vapor.  Then read Working Group I Report, Page 114:

It is somewhat unsettling that the results of a complex climate model can be so drastically altered by substituting one reasonable cloud parametrization for another, thereby approximately replicating the overall intermodal range of sensitivities.

Another “death nail” is found later in the same report.  But first answer a simple question, “Is Monte Carlo a world renowned center for science or gambling?”  Read Page 118:

Comparing different models is not sufficient, however. Using multiple simulations from a single model (the so-called Monte Carlo, or ensemble, approach) has proved a necessary and complementary approach to assess the stochastic nature of the climate system. The first ensemble climate change simulations with global GCMs used a set of different initial and boundary conditions (Cubasch et al., 1994; Barnett, 1995). Computational constraints limited early ensembles to a relatively small number of samples (fewer than 10). These ensemble simulations clearly indicated that even with a single model a large spread in the

climate projections can be obtained.

There is renewed confusion “on the Hill” about Methane.

The idea of regulating belches and farts is back.  That’s because there’s confusion in the U.N. IPCC Report.  Methane is significant because it reflects 22 times more radiant energy than CO2.  But, according to Report 2, Methane has been diminishing for almost a decade.  What’s the reports explanation? – Page 142:

“The reasons for the decrease in the atmospheric CH4 growth rate and the implications for future changes in its atmospheric burden are not understood (Prather et al., 2001) but are clearly related to changes in the imbalance between CH4 sources and sinks.”

When a scientific report states that they don’t understand, it means “They don’t understand.”  In normal science, it would mean a “do over”…write a new theory that is supported by the new facts.  In Global Warming Theory, it means “Pass legislation fast before the people find out.”

If you read the remainder of the report, you will find great scientistx trying hard to support the theory that “man” is responsible for Climate Change.  Getting the phrase “Monte Carlo” past the editors is just one example.

BUT THE U.N. IPCC REPORT IS NOT CONCLUSIVE.

WORSE, CURRENT CLIMATE CONDITIONS ARE CONTRARY TO THE PROJECTIONS.

There had to be a missing piece.  I had gone through this twice:  Greenhouse Gas/Global Cooling & Greenhouse Gas/Global Warming.

The missing piece is so simple I am surprised no one else has discovered it.

First, let me simplify Climate Change. Then I will show you the missing piece.

Climate Change - simplified

Every day there’s Global Warming.

Every night there’s Global Cooling.

Every summer there’s Global Warming.

Every winter there’s Global Cooling.

There are also Global Warming and Cooling cycles over 100’s of years.

1,000 years ago Greenland was green and there were vineyards in the north of London.

It was know as the Medieval Warm Period.  Before Al Gore, it was also called “Climate Optimum”, the optimum climate for man in Europe where most humanity survived.

500 years ago was the “Little Ice Age”.  The Little Ice Ace was spawned by 5 major volcanoes in a 10 year period.  Glaciers wiped out entire villages in Europe.  England changed staples from wheat to potatoes.  Life was hard.

The problem with cycles of 100’s of years is that humans can not relate.

So drop back to the yearly cycle and add a little talked about part of Greenhouse Gas.

This is the critical insight overlooked by the U.N. IPCC Reports.

The Critical Information overlooked in the U.N. IPCC Report

Greenhouse Gas is not evenly distributed around our planet.

All Greenhouse Gas is in the Troposphere.

The Troposphere is 12 miles thick at the equator and zero to 4 miles thick at the poles.

During the summer, the oceans warm, ‘exhale’ greenhouse gas, and there is 4 miles of Troposphere at the poles.  During the winter, the oceans cool, ‘inhale’ greenhouse gas, and the Troposphere is indistinguishable at the poles.  That is why there are Northern Lights on the North Pole every winter.

Once we realize that our planet “breathes” every year to adjust to seasonal changes, it’s easier to understand that it also “breathes” to adjust to our sun’s temperaments.  When the sun belches, our oceans warm, exhale greenhouse gas, to protect our planet.  That includes us.  When the sun mellows, the oceans cool and inhale greenhouse gas, so we don’t freeze.

This breathing cycle is also interesting because it means that the Polar Ice Caps are not melting because of greenhouse gas.  Greenhouse gas is the thinnest at the poles.

This new insight also explains why the famous Ice Core Samples have extremely low Greenhouse Gas levels.  The samples are from winter, when the greenhouse gasses are the thinnest.  And from the far north, where the gasses are thinner still.

This also explains why the sun’s radiation was not seen as the cause of Global Warming.  The oceans exhale greenhouse gas to protect the planet, which reduces radiation readings.

We are still talking about “Carbon Credits”.  They started with the 4 Kyoto Protocol Treaty Greenhouse Gasses.  But 3 of the 4, according to the U.N. Report, are diminishing.  So now we’re supposed to regulate CO2 (CO2’s rate of growth peaked in 1998), call it “Carbon Credit” and forget about the major green house gasses that started this whole thing?

The reason 3 of the 4 gasses are decreasing is because they are the heavier molecules   They are being inhaled first.  But pay attention to current CO2 levels and not levels from last decade, and you’ll sleep better at night.

The Physics of Alternative Fuels

We all have different gifts.  Two of mine have always been math and science.  I have proven success creating environmental solutions that produce a return-on-investment.  Often I forget

that “normal people” don’t see what is obvious to me.

Let me simplify.

If there’s no “R”, it’s not and “I”, it’s an “E”.

If there’s no Return, it’s not and Investment, it’s an Expense.

We keep “Expensing” into alternative fuels before anyone even understands the physics.

Bio Fuels

The physics of fuels.  Diesel has 138,000 BTUs of energy per gallon; gas 125,000 BTUs, natural gas 90,000 BTUs, bio-fuel 80,000 BTUs and a car battery has 3,500 BTUs.  Natural gas needs to sell for 35% less than diesel to yield the same energy per dollar.  For Bio-fuel it’s 42% less.  And it requires 40 car batteries to yield the same energy as a gallon of diesel.

Replacing imported oil with wind power is a noble idea.

But it will require 2.04 Trillion Dollars to buy the wind turbines.  We import 3.6 Billion barrels of oil a year.  The BOE (Barrel of oil equivalent) is 58 Million BTU per barrel.  That means that we import 208 Quadrillion BTU’s of energy.  A 600 KW wind generator produces 1.5 Million KW per year (running at the World Wide average of 28% efficiency).  1 kWh is 3,412 BTUs.  A 600 kWh wind generator produces 51.2 Billion BTUs of energy a year.  It would require 4.1 million generators to replace imported oil.  The average cost for a 600 kW generator is $500,000.  The cost for just the wind generators would be 2.04 Trillion Dollars.  Double that to include updating the grid.  Then figure out how to pay to replace all the cars…

Replacing imported oil with solar.

First, solar doesn’t like the heat of Arizona.  It loses 30% of its efficiency during summer.

I just checked “sunnyportal” and a 4 kWh system I’m monitoring produced 700 kWh in May.  To reach the BOE yield from oil imports, we will need 854 Million solar systems at a cost of $42,000 each for a total price of 36 Trillion Dollars.  Considering the Government and Power Companies rebate half, the Federal Government only needs 18 Trillion Dollars to replace imported oil with solar.  The grid, however, wouldn’t need as much work because solar can provide localized power.  But we still need to replace all those cars…

Now think differently.

Crude oil is refined into diesel, gas and solvent by injecting Hydrogen to make

the heavy Carbon molecules more volatile (Hydro cracking).

Gas is refined to burn at a14-18% efficiency.  That means that 82-86% of the energy in gas

goes out the tailpipe as pollution.

By in injecting Hydrogen in the intake of any internal combustion engine, the burn efficiency

can reach 90%.  That increases the engine efficiency by 20-40% and drops pollution to

practically zero.

This is not theory.  These are the results of our early testing of the MagDrive System.

MagDrive IS state-of-the-art.  We are calling it Hydrogen Boosted Fuel, HyBoFuel, in Arizona.

We are 30-60 days away from certification of our test trucks.  We will then have our results

confirmed by Arizona DOT.  Then the MagDrive factory will install 6 systems on any 6

vehicles DOT chooses.  After a 6 month evaluation by DOT, MagDrive will enter into contract

with Arizona Correctional Industries to manufacture the MagDrive systems for all State,

County and City vehicles.

This is a “Game Changer”.

If oil is no longer evil, if oil is no longer the problem, then it’s the solution.

We could “drill baby drill” to gain our independence from foreign oil and use the tax revenues from the new production to pay down our National debt.

We will know in early 2010.

Excitement in Arizona’s Future

What would happen if new homes used 60% less energy on air conditioning?

What if the same were true for new businesses?

What if most existing homes and business could save 35% on air conditioning?

It’s all happening.

The “Olsen House” (www.theolsenhouse.com)

This was a standard track home built by Beazer.  It was gutted by fire and rebuilt with a Dual Plane Attic® and EvAAC®.  The first test video documented a 53% savings in electricity on a 98 degree day.  Now that summer is finally here, we will continue testing.  It will surpass a 60% savings in air conditioning vs. the same exact tract home down the street.  These new construction details yield a 50% ROI.  And for the environmentalists, the Olsen house is saving the energy equivalent of 4 barrels of oil.

Dual Plan Attics® (www.dualplaneattics.com)

Most people understand dual-pane windows.  Dual Plane Attics® is equally revolutionary.  There are two “planes” of insulation:  the standard R-30 on the ceiling and double/bubble, foil-foil on the rafters with full soffit and ridge venting.  The attic stays ambient temperature or below and the roof sheeting stays ambient.     Initial testing on Dual Plane Attics® documented a 25% savings in air conditioning costs yielding a 30% ROI.

EvAAC® (www.evaac.com)

Evaporation Aided Air Conditioning.  EvAAC® saves 35% on air conditioning costs.  EvAAC® is like an automated swamp cooler that surrounds most existing air-conditioner compressors.  Air conditioners are designed around SEER (Seasonal Energy Efficiency Rating).  SEER design and testing is done at 95 degrees outside, 75 degrees inside.  The hotter it gets, the less efficient air conditioners become.  By pre-cooling the air entering the compressor, the air conditioner is more efficient and uses less energy.  Pre-cooling is not new.  What’s new is a System designed, tested and built in Arizona for Arizonians.  In fact, EvAAC® is being built by Arizona Correctional Industries and a test system is on the roof of Phoenix West Prison.

The “McEwen Shop

The Olsen House was “proof of concept” for residential housing.  The McEwen Shop is a 4,000 sq. ft. shop where we are installing the commercial version of a Dual Plane Attic® and Dual Plane Walls.  The baseline temp in the shop on June 26th was 135 degrees.  Our goal is 86 degrees.

Conclusion:

I do not know if we can stop ‘Cap and Trade’.

If it would have past last decade, they could have taken credit for the cooling trend we’re in.

But they didn’t.  And they are using decade old information and “Heat Island” to support their argument.

I am not against an energy tax.  It would be good for all my businesses.

But I am embarrassed that it’s all blamed on Climate Change/Global Warming.

If I am “One in a Million”, that means there are 13 million just like me in China.

There are scientists all over this world smarter than I am.

And I am sure they are just as embarrassed.

The answer to our pollution problems hasn’t changed for the 37 years I’ve been paying attention.  Find the products or services that are good for the environment and yield a respectable ROI.  Promote them.

False science and false economy always yield false results.

I want to close with the four words that will be useless later, “I told you so.”
