I don't understand
Carbon-Offset Credits.
I thought I did...until I
Googled carbon-offset credits.
One of the first 5 sites I
looked at was proud that 85% of the money they received went to the
cause. The cause was to bring awareness to the problem. Does
knowledge or action solve the problem?
Some of the other sites
talked about "offsetting your carbon footprint by supporting trees or
alternative energy."
Both of those are future
offsets.
Is it politically correct to
borrow future environmental credit to pay for today's excesses?
Debt always adds stress. Now it's going to be environmental debt?
I understand the need for
money in developing new technology.
But the idea that I don't
have to do anything personally to help the environment because I'm
paying someone else to do it reminds me of paying runners to exercise
for me back in the '80's when I worked in San Francisco's Financial
District.
The multi-family recycling
program I created in 1994 has saved 50,000 trees and continues to save
4,000 or 5,000 trees each year. Does that mean I get to put wheels
on the Queen Mary and use her as my daily commuter?
The One Quadrillion BTU
Project will save one quadrillion BTUs of energy. Should I look
into putting wheels on the Space Shuttle? Or should I sell
carbon-offset credits up to it's carbon-offset credit value of 1-5
Billion Dollars, depending on who's credit calculator you use?
And is carbon the only
environmental issue?
Gold for our jewelry puts 10
to 15 times more mercury into the atmosphere than all our coal electric
plants combined. That's O.K.?
I am “self-funding” the One
Quadrillion BTU Project. It's exciting.
I have “self-funded” the
Environmental Maniac up to this point.
If the Maniac only saves one
child or pregnant woman from mercury poisoning, it will be worth it.
