CFL Recycling

There's good news and horrible news.

The good news is that it's easy to do your part.  Just put a brown bag next to where you keep your new light bulbs.  When a CFL burns out, put it in the brown bag.

Also put your used batteries in the same bag.  Then do a little research and you'll find an easy place to drop off the used bulbs and batteries.

The bad news is that once you do your part, the Mercury is recycled and sent to third world countries to use in gold processing.  Gold processing emits 10-20 times as much Mercury into the atmosphere as all the U.S. coal power plants combined.  80% of that gold is used for jewelry.

Why aren't people told of the environmental dangers associated with gold jewelry?

Good question.
